Holden
Australia’s Holden Car Company has grown from a saddlery business in Adelaide in 1852 to making repairs to car upholstery in 1908 and car bodies in 1919. These bodies were made to fit various imported chassis including Chevrolet and Dodge. It became the exclusive supplier of car bodies for General Motors in 1924. The Great Depression brought a slump in manufacture from 34,000 units in 1930 to only 1650 a year later. Thus in 1931 it was absorbed into a new company known as General Motors-Holden’s Ltd. A full-scale car factory was commenced in Port Melbourne, Victoria and in 1939 another in Pagewood, New South Wales where GM models were assembled. World War 11 delayed a full car manufacture when the new plants were contracted to build military vehicle bodies, field guns, aircraft and various engines.
The Australian Government wished for an Australian automobile industry. Ford and General Motors tendered to build the cars. While Ford’s design was the first choice, it needed much financial help and GM finally won the contract. An American design was first proposed, but a local car based on a rejected post-war Chevrolet was launched in 1948. It was named the Holden and its various models were the dominate brand in the market for many years and are now exported overseas.
The Holden has been an icon and a beacon to not only Australian Motoring but part of Australia's history as well. From the FJ Holden and the clasic songs sung about it, through to Peter Brock's Reign as King of the Mountain and of more recent note the ongoing clashes between the likes of Skaife / Tander and Winterbottom / Richards., the Holden has forever and will continue forever to have a special place in the heart of Australian's everywhere.
