Fiat

The Fiat S.p.A. is another Italian manufacture based in Turin, Italy. The name is an acronym for Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino which was a company founded in 1899. The first Fiat was based on the Benz of which only eight models were made. In 1903 Fiat produced their first truck while they had success with aircraft engines and later army tanks. Fiat taxis were popular in Europe in the early part of the 20thC. By 1910 Fiat was the largest automotive company in Italy.

Today the Fiat group’s subsidiaries are Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Iveco, Lancia and Maserati and after ending an association with General Motors in 2005 are now in consultation with Ford. There have been many Fiat models over the years including the Fiat 124, 128, Uno, Punto, Panda and in 2008 the European Car of the Year, the Fiat Nuova 500.
