Daewoo

Daewoo was first established in South Korea in 1937, but followed a troubled career, changing its name under several different owners until 2001 when it became GM Daewoo. Daewoo trucks continued to be manufactured under the Daewoo name until they too were absorbed by Tata Motors, but this company is intended to become part of General Motors late in 2008. The first Daewoo car sold around the world in the nineties was based on a GM Opel Kadett. Other Opel-based models followed. Other vehicles were built in Romania, Russia, Malaysia, India in association with Holden Australia.

In 1998 the Daewoo Lanos (meaning “pleasure” in Latin) was built on a Daewoo platform as were the Daewoo Nubira and Leganza. However, these vehicles like the Espero and Nexia Daewoo cars were often rebadged for foreign markets and sold under other names. For instance GM re-badged the Daewoo Lacetti as the Chevrolet Optra. Today Daewoo models can be found including:

Daewoo Cielo and the  Daewoo Matiz.
