Audi

Audi has its origin with August Horch in 1899 who lost the Horch company in 1909. He then began manufacturing a new car, the Audi. Audi means “listen” in Latin which is “horch” in German.

The first Audi cars were 4 cylinder and a 6 cylinder was introduced in 1924. In 1932 Audi merged with Horch, DKW and Wanderer to form the Auto Union Company. They produced successful single seater racing cars as well and raced the “Silver Arrows” until 1939. During World War 11 they manufactured armoured cars and light transport vehicles for the German Army. Their factories were bombed heavily and what remained ended up in the Soviet occupied zone to build the socialist VEB Automobilwerk Zwickau or AWZ cars.

 However after the War new Auto Union cars were built in Bavaria until acquired by Daimler-Benz in 1959. In 1964 the brand was bought by Volkswagen who relaunched the Audi in 1965 known as Audi 60s, 75s, 80s and super 90s due to their horsepower rating until 1972. Then released as the Volkswagen Passat and rebadged the Audi 50 in 1974. The Audi Quattro in 1980 a turbocharged all-wheel drive coupe was successful in rallying. Audi models are stillavailable.
